Therapy at home for burnout Therapy at home can help relive symptoms of burnout and prevent its progression. Self-care strategies addressing psychological detachment from work, managing work overload and boosting resources are essential. Receiving social support, practicing mindfulness, eating healthy diet, exercising and maintaining good sleep hygiene are key. Psychological detachment from work during non-work hours is important to recovery. Difficulty detaching is associated with higher burnout. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time, not checking emails once off work and engaging in leisure activities can help achieve detachment. Managing work overload through improved time management, learning to say no and revising unrealistic expectations of oneself as a therapist can lower burnout risk. Seeking varied and meaningful work provides motivation and a sense of accomplishment which offsets exhaustion. Boosting resources through self-care enhances resilience and coping. Socializing with colleagues, family and friends provides emotional support. Engaging in regular exercise releases endorphins improving mood and sleep. A balanced nutritious diet gives energy and mindfulness practices reduce distressing thoughts, promoting relaxation. Competence constellations, involving ongoing consultation with colleagues, supervisors and professional bodies allow challenging situations to be navigated well, enhancing client outcomes and personal growth. While self-care is key, organizational and systemic changes may also be needed to establish reasonable workloads, increased flexibility and autonomy and access to supervision. Receiving adequate training and professional development reduces feelings of ineffectiveness that contribute to burnout. With attention to these areas, the risk and effects of burnout can be significantly reduced through implementing a self-care plan at home. However, for some the addition of psychological interventions may be required, especially when severe burnout exists. Spa therapy and yoga have also demonstrated benefit for relieving symptoms. Overall a holistic approach addressing individual, professional and organizational factors is optimal for sustaining wellbeing and providing quality client care.
