Summary
Sexuality education in France has developed since 1992 to promote knowledge about sexuality, equality and prevent violence. However, breastfeeding seems to be absent from sexuality education in France and internationally according to UNESCO’s guidelines. A review of 26 French texts from 1992 to 2022 and UNESCO’s recommendations confirms this. Breastfeeding and its contraceptive effects are missing from French and UNESCO sexuality education. No studies have addressed this in the past 5 years, indicating breastfeeding is a blind spot in achieving gender equality in reproductive health education. Questions arise about why this female bodily function is ignored, public attitudes about breastfeeding beyond age 2, feelings about female orgasm causing milk let-down and children from different partners being breastfed by the same woman. The WHO strongly recommends breastfeeding and providing support measures. However, the decision to breastfeed is usually made under pressure, without enough time to consider options and feelings of guilt about the reality. The aim should be egalitarian sexuality education that includes all aspects of sexual and reproductive health, including breastfeeding.
