Peppermint oil contains compounds that may stimulate hair follicles and increase hair growth. Studies in mice show peppermint oil accelerates hair growth, increases hair follicle number and depth, and enhances dermal thickness. A clinical trial found a combination of lavender, rosemary, thyme, and cedarwood essential oils with peppermint oil increased hair density and number in human subjects. Peppermint oil's hair growth effects may relate to increasing blood flow to hair follicles, stimulating keratinocyte proliferation, and prolonging the anagen phase of hair growth. Peppermint oil shows promise as a natural hair growth remedy for androgenic alopecia and other types of hair loss. As with any treatment, individuals should do a patch test to check for sensitivity before using peppermint oil on the scalp and hair. Although limited research exists, peppermint oil for hair growth appears to be a safe and effective option for some people.
