Summary
Vaping, like smoking, exposes users to some toxic chemicals in e-cigarette vapor, though at lower levels compared to cigarettes. E-cig vapors contain high levels of nicotine which is highly addictive and can harm brain development in young people. However, vaping is less harmful than smoking cigarettes. The cigarette contains over 4,000 toxic chemicals including 70 carcinogens whereas e-cigarettes contain fewer chemicals overall.Vaping poses less risk for cancer and lung disease compared to smoking. For those who currently smoke, completely switching to vaping significantly reduces health risks.Vaping may also help to quit smoking when integrated into a comprehensive smoking cessation program. According to several studies, vaping does seem to be a gateway to smoking cigarettes especially among youth. The risk appears higher even for those with low inclination to smoke.Vaping also seems to create higher levels of nicotine addiction compared to smoking. The increasing popularity of vaping threatens decades of efforts to curb smoking and its health impacts.More research is still needed but vaping does not appear to outweigh the risks, especially for youth and non-smokers.Regulating vaping and educating people about the risks could help address some of these concerns. In summary, while vaping is likely less harmful than smoking due to fewer toxic chemicals, it still poses health risks, especially long term risks that are still unknown. Both vaping and smoking expose users to nicotine which is highly addictive. For those already smoking, switching to vaping could reduce health risks but eliminating use of all tobacco and nicotine-containing products is the healthiest choice.Vaping also appears to attract youth and promote smoking initiation which threatens public health.Regulating vaping and educating people about the risks are important to maximizing the benefits of vaping as a harm reduction tool while minimizing its harms.
