Summary
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being applied in population health and healthcare. While the benefits are recognized, AI also poses substantial societal implications that require governance. However, citizens are currently lacking participation in AI governance. A study explored the perspectives of citizens and experts on the ethics of AI in population health, citizen engagement in AI governance, and the potential of a digital app to support this. The participants perceived AI to already be present in population health, recognized the benefits but also the societal implications, and showed a high level of agreement that citizens should be involved in AI governance. They highlighted aspects to consider in developing an accessible and transparent app to raise awareness, survey opinions, and support citizens in decision making on ethical, legal and social issues of AI in population health. AI can change algorithms in ways originally unintended by humans. AI has surpassed humans in some cognitive realms, indicating a ‘cognitive singularity’. We must prepare for continued progress. Conceptually, human knowledge has progressed from early examples like rock art to creating humanoid robots that can perform risky tasks, raising ethical issues. While these robots resemble and interact with humans, they also generate ethical issues for society. The idea of humans achieving immortality through knowledge and AI is complex and requires defining ethical guidelines.
Consensus Meter
AI is widely used in healthcare, but there is a lack of citizen participation in its governance. A study explored perspectives on AI ethics and the potential of a digital app to engage citizens. Participants emphasized the need for an accessible and transparent app to support citizens' decision-making.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to predict the onset of Alzheimer's disease several years in advance, but ethical concerns arise when offering this early diagnosis to asymptomatic individuals. The right to know, future planning, and risk-benefit assessment are reasons for offering predictive tests, while lack of treatment and threats to social rights are reasons against. to mitigate these ethical concerns, pre-symptomatic testing should only be offered upon request and physicians should receive training in communicating AI predictions.

AI research lacks adequate institutional responses to criticisms and responsibility relating to its impacts on society. A feedback panel called the Ethics and Society Review board (ESR) has been developed to address these concerns, requiring researchers to complete the ESR process to receive grant funding. The ESR commonly identifies issues of harm to minority groups, lack of diversity in stakeholders, dual use, and representation in data, and has influenced the design of research projects.
