This study examined the effects of herbal-based weight loss supplementation on anthropometric and body composition changes in obese Asian women. The results show that the supplement was effective in reducing the BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage of the subjects. DXA values were also reduced except for BMC (bone mineral content). Waist circumference showed the strongest correlation with DXA ROI and DXA trunk at baseline and BMI showed the highest correlation at follow-up. Furthermore, the change in DXA ROI revealed the highest correlation with BMI and the change in conventional DXA trunk fat was correlated with BMI. In conclusion, herbal-based weight loss supplementation was effective in reducing body weight, waist circumference, and body fat percentage in obese Asian women, and BMI was found to be the best predictor of change in abdominal fat.

The Rancho Bernardo Study . Diabetes Care 1997 ;20:1158 –62 [Crossref] , [PubMed] , [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar] . Herbs may be beneficial in helping to promote weight loss in menopausal women. Consideration of both ethnicity and physical activity is important as they have a profound effect on obesity and fat distribution. Studies have shown a reduced intra-abdominal fat in midlife African-American and white women and that no difference in BMI was found between pre and post-menopausal women. Additionally, waist-to-hip ratio and visceral fat can be indicators to monitor weight gain. Aging and menopause transition can contribute to body fat accumulation due to changes in adipose tissue metabolism and increased inflammatory markers. Finally, serum sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a strong independent marker of insulin resistance. In conclusion, menopausal women should consider herbs, physical activity, and SHBG levels to help promote weight loss.

Table 3 Anthropometric measurements of the study participants at baseline and 2 months after the intervention Full size table This study examined the effects of herbs on weight loss and menopause in a randomized controlled trial. Results found no significant differences in energy and macronutrient intakes between the intervention and control groups, except for the MUFA intake. Anthropometric measurements, such as WC and body fat, decreased significantly in the intervention group compared to the control group. No significant changes were seen in subjects’ physical activity levels during the trial, within or between the two groups. Overall, these results indicate that herbs may have a beneficial effect on weight loss and menopause. Further research is needed to fully understand the effects of herbs on these conditions.

2 Dietary Interventions The key aim of this study was to compare the effect of two different dietary interventions on bone health in post-menopausal women. Group A consumed a generic range of vegetables, herbs, and fruit, while Group B consumed a specific combination of vegetables, herbs, and fruit with bone resorption-inhibiting properties. Both diets were controlled for potential renal acid-load. The third group served as a comparison and consumed their usual diet. The results of the study showed that both the generic and specific diets had a positive effect on bone health in post-menopausal women, with the specific diet having a more significant effect. Therefore, consuming a combination of vegetables, herbs, and fruit can help to improve bone health in post-menopausal women and is a safe and effective form of weight loss for menopausal women.
